Community Arts at The Brunswick
As part of the plans to regenerate The Brunswick in Bloomsbury,
developers, Allied London Properties have commissioned two
artists to produce visually stimulating works to enhance the
look and feel of the exciting new shopping scheme.
The first of the two commissions involves a Community Arts
Programme that will be overseen by artist Elizabeth-Jane Grose
who will produce a sculpture following a series of workshops
in conjunction with the residents. Elizabeth-Jane will spend
time on site gathering information of historical interest,
liaising with residents and generally observing how people
currently use the site.
An exhibition will be held at The Brunswick to showcase the
development of the design work, the results of the workshops
and will display the final design.
Neil Carron, project director at Allied London Properties,
says, "Involving the community is a fantastic way to keep
the art specific to the environment and ensure that the people
using the site will get the most out of it. Consultation with
the local community will be part of the project and we have
made a successful application to the Arts & Business Fund
to assist with this aspect of the commission."
The final piece will be a permanent fixture adjacent to the
Marchmont Street entrance. This vertical feature will be replacing
a ventilation shaft that currently blocks part of the entrance.
Susanna Heron has been chosen to produce the second installation
in conjunction with the development works. Allied London Properties
decided to combine a proportion of the art plus the landscaping
budget to create a spectacular installation through the central
area of the scheme. Susanna is currently in discussion with
appointed architects Levitt Bernstein and the original architect,
Patrick Hodgkinson who will work together throughout the project.
Neil Carron, adds, "The intention of making such a statement
by way of incorporating a large installation will not only
make an aesthetic improvement to the environment for the local
residents, workers and students, but will serve to attract
many more visitors to the area."
Susanna says she is "very excited by the opportunity of working
in collaboration with Levitt Bernstein Associates and Patrick
Hodgkinson to create a site specific public art work for the
Brunswick Centre."
